Major structure
Overview
You will gain skills in mathematical modelling of biological and engineering systems, analytical and abstract thinking, problem-solving and design skills, and carrying out laboratory experiments to test possible solutions to complex problems.
You’ll focus on human systems, the design and operation of devices and processes, and the application of engineering skills to new medical treatments, instruments and machines.
Your major structure
You can study this major in the Bachelor of Biomedicine or Bachelor of Science.
BACHELOR OF BIOMEDICINE
You will take 8 core subjects (125 points) across your degree that will build an understanding of the structure and function of the body and consideration of the determinants of health and disease, including genetic and environmental influences (4 in first year, 2 in second year and 2 in third year).
In your third year, you will complete 50 points (four subjects) of deep and specialised study in biomedical engineering systems.
Throughout your degree you will also take elective and breadth (non-science) subjects.
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
In your first and second years you’ll complete subjects that are prerequisites for your major, including mathematics, biology and foundational engineering subjects. You can study engineering subjects from your first year with us, and you’ll have plenty of flexibility to explore other interests too.
In your third year, you will complete 50 points (four subjects) of study that is deep and specialised study in bioengineering systems.
Throughout your degree you will also take science elective subjects and breadth (non-science) subjects, in addition to your major subjects and prerequisites.
