Course structure
Overview
The Master of Digital Infrastructure Engineering is a 2–3 year degree (full-time) depending on your prior study.
Course structure
First year
In your first year (or equivalent) you’ll complete foundation engineering subjects. So if you're from a non-engineering background, you'll bring your broad expertise and learn to apply it to the engineering discipline. If you’ve completed a Digital Infrastructure Engineering Systems major in your bachelor’s degree, plus the required maths and science subjects, you’ll receive credit for these foundation engineering subjects and start in second year.
Second and third year
In the second and third year of the program (or equivalent), you’ll focus on your chosen engineering discipline. As a digital infrastructure engineering student, your focus will be on digital solutions to monitor and manage our environment. You’ll be involved in Smart Cities, the Internet of Things, and intelligent decision making out world.
You’ll undertake an industry, design or research project and gain the skills and knowledge to practice as a professional engineer.
Choose your specialisation
As a Master of Digital Infrastructure Engineering student, you can pursue your career goals and interests through a specialisation, or you can choose not to specialise if you’d prefer.
Cultural Heritage
Dive into cultural heritage, where you can apply your digital technology skills to capture and visualise objects of cultural heritage.
Artificial Intelligence
Apply and deepen core digital infrastructure engineering skills in machine learning and computer vision.
Business
Study tailored business subjects developed in partnership with the Melbourne Business School to devise strategies for marketing, people management, risk management, and procurement for digital infrastructure.
Communication Infrastructure
Discover the technologies behind communication networks like 5G and the Internet of Things. You’ll design the communication systems of the future to optimise network design and data processing.
Construction
Learn to apply your geospatial engineering and IT skills in the context of construction and digital engineering.
Energy
Combine digital infrastructure engineering skills with insights into sustainable energy systems.
Industry
Combine digital infrastructure engineering skills with insights for industry best practices.
Information Systems
Combine IT management and digital business to drive organisational and technological change in infrastructure engineering sectors.
Information Technology
Use your knowledge in digital infrastructure and combine with stronger expertise in programming, internet technologies and digital architectures.
Land
Drive the digital transformation of the surveying sector: learn about the design and integrate surveys for subdividing land ownership into digital infrastructure or interpret the status of ownership in the context of culture, law and planning.
This specialisation is a condition for Surveyor Registration Board of Victoria accreditation
Mobility
Use your digital infrastructure engineering knowledge to improve how people and freight move around the cities so we can plan and build more efficient systems.
Smart Cities
Think about how to apply digital infrastructure in the context of managing the resources in a smart city.
Sustainable Cities
Support the sustainable development of our cities by your skills in digital infrastructure engineering.
Water
Apply digital infrastructure engineering tools to plan and manage water resources and water infrastructure in a sustainable way.

Industry, design and research subjects
Internship subject
Build your skills and work experience through our academically credited Internship subject. Run over 10–15 weeks, you could intern at a transport, infrastructure or surveying organisation.
Creating Innovative Engineering subject
Work on a real-world innovation challenge with an industry mentor through our Creating Innovative Engineering subject.
Endeavour exhibition
Work on an industry-partnered project, or pursue your own exploratory research and you’ll have the opportunity to present the findings to the public at our annual engineering showcase, the Endeavour Engineering and IT Exhibition. The EMI Capstone subject is your way to showcase how to connect engineering research, to a real-world problem. You'll start with the Engineering Capstone Project subject.
