Student experience

Overview

Your student experience goes beyond the lecture theatre. The University of Melbourne provides the opportunity to participate, engage and develop through practical experience and workshops, overseas study and student clubs and societies.

Study overseas and exchange

Commerce students are encouraged to experience overseas study, and with 200 university and college partners in 43 countries, you can shape an experience unique to you. Immerse yourself in different cultural, social and intellectual environments to include an international perspective to your academic development.

The University has a suite of scholarships and grants to assist students financially with studying overseas. Which is why in 2018, over 520 commerce students studied overseas.

Student clubs, societies, and associations

Commerce student clubs and societies provide valuable industry connections and fantastic development opportunities – from offering consulting experiences with local and international charities to empowering more women to excel in finance. Some of our associated clubs include:

  • Accounting Students’ Association
  • Actuarial Students’ Society
  • Banking on Women
  • Economics Student Society of Australia
  • Enactus
  • Financial Management Association of Australia
  • Global Consulting Group
  • Melbourne Microfinance Initiative
  • Students’ Association of Management and Marketing.

Profile

Sophie Proud

“I never thought that by the end of my first year of university, I would have had the chance to go overseas and work on a social impact project with student club Melbourne Microfinance Initiative (MMI) and really make a difference; it's still incredible to me”

Sophie and a small team worked on a project in the Philippines to create a comprehensive training manual for all levels of staff at JVOFI, a Pilipino microfinance organisation. The MMI club sees students use their commerce and consulting skills to help enhance the work of the microfinance institutions in a number of countries in the Asia-Pacific, ranging from the Philippines, to Samoa and Vietnam.
